"The First Nuclear Submarine"

After many years of being "top secret," the first American nuclear submarine is being put on display. I get to see it before the official opening. I'm amazed to see that the designers made its interior precisely resemble a typical suburban home of the period (the 1950s). The kitchen (with its period appliances, chrome and formica furnishings), the den (featuring a sectional sofa and a bar), and the living room (complete with a big picture window) all looked exactly like the houses in the suburban community where I grew up. I assumed in the dream that it had been designed this way to make life aboard the submarine more familiar and less threatening for the crew. Nevertheless, it seemed incredibly incongruous to the point of being funny. The decor was totally inappropriate to the function of the submarine and its mission.

Interpretation:
The dreamer writes: "This is a dream about the early stages of my adulthood when my mission was to be a man and go out into the world on my own. I was expected to function independently and be self-sufficient, facing unknown dangers in a threatening environment. Having only the experiences of my childhood to prepare me, my inner world was fashioned out of what was comfortable and familiar. It was inappropriate and incongruous to the role I was expected to play in the world, but that's who I was forty years ago. I might have had this insight into my young adulthood sooner, but how could I? It was top secret!"
